ABOUT SHAY FENNELLY AND AQUAPHOTO


Photographer and journalist Shay Fennelly runs AQUAPHOTO a photo library specialising in documenting the marine sector in Ireland and internationally. He has supplied images and photo features on the environment, coastal zone management, offshore islands, fish farming, the fishing industry, energy, oil and gas exploration, shipping, ocean technology, tourism, and wildlife to Newspapers, Magazines, Book Publishers, Private Companies and Government Bodies. Shay Fennelly is also qualified as a Marine mammmal observer and holds BOSIET (Basic offshore safety induction & emergency training course), STWC 95 Regulation VI/1 and Code Table   A-VI/1-1 and PST certification for working offshore.

Shay Fennelly has documented Ireland’s marine sector since 1986. His photojournalism aims to increase awareness of Ireland’s marine economy and environment. He has documented aquaculture, coastal zone management, marine ecotourism, offshore oil and gas exploration, oil pollution, air sea rescue, drift netting wild salmon, bluefin tuna, whales and dolphins and traditional sailing craft in photofeatures published in Irish and UK publications.

His first photojournalism report was published in Fish Farming International, based on his experience mussel farming in Clew Bay, Co. Mayo. His first travel photographs illustrate a book nd a film which he shot - ‘Sailing to Leningrad’, published by Collins/ Grafton, in 1987, and a Channel 4/Ulster television program - ‘40 Degrees West’- of a yacht (6 metres) voyage from Ireland to St. Petersburg and the Baltic States in Russia pre glasnost. In 1991 he photographed the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race in South America.

Since 2000 he contributes regularly to newspapers and magazines. Features are a speciality (see Publications) and his work has been published in the broadsheets - the Irish Times, Irish Independent magazine, Examiner, Financial Times, and the marine press - Inshore Ireland, the Irish Skipper, Marine Times, Fishing News (UK) and Fish Farming International (UK). In 2001 he was awarded a John Healy National Print Award for a feature article in the Irish Times on how the Shetland Islanders benefited from the development of Sullom Voe Oil Terminal and North Sea Oil.

Recent features include photojournalism reports on Europe's new Marine Strategy Framework Directive legislation, Turbot farming , Galway Hookers, the Corrib gas project in Mayo, Ireland's coastal zone management policy, the Prestige oil spill disaster in Spain, satellite tagging Bluefin tuna off Donegal and photo features on the Mullet peninsula, Achill Yawls, and the Sceiligs in County Kerry.

HOW TO ORDER STOCK PHOTOGRAPHS FOR REPRODUCTION

When a request for photographs for reproduction is recieved, a range of pictures are selected if not already specified by the client and delivered by email or by registered post/courier as soon as possible. Fees payable are based on the print run, use of the photographs, the rights required by the client and agreed expenses.The fees charged are based on recommended minimum fees for picture useage suggested by the National Union of Journalists and the British Association for Picture Libraries.When a decision is taken on the pictures the client wishes to use, I require written confirmation of the intended print run, size of picture reproduction, use of the picture ( book, brochure, newspaper, magazine, commercial PR) and where (cover or inside page) to calculate fees for picture use. Payment is due on final acceptance of offered material on receipt of an invoice.
