Tilting fishing village, Fogo Island, Newfoundland October 2003

In one week in October 2003 I visited Tilting in Fogo Island ( population 3500 ), Newfoundland. Tilting is a community of Irish descendents who have been fishing and farming for many generations. Several historic houses and fishing stages have been restored by the Tilting Recreation and Cultural Society (TRACS). The Ireland Newfoundland Partnership which promotes links between Ireland and Newfoundland supported my visit. Canadian Architect Robert Mellin has captured the vernacular heritage of Tilting in his wonderful book of the same name.
