I have documented the environment, coastal zone management, offshore islands, fish farming, the fishing industry, energy, oil and gas exploration, sailing, shipping, ocean technology, marine tourism, and wildlife for newspapers, magazines, book publishers, private companies and government agencies for more than twenty years in Ireland and in Argentina, Spain, Canada, Hong Kong, and Tanzania. Since 1992 I worked with the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group as a Director on marine conservation of whales and dolphins and campaigned for the implementation of the Habitats and EIA Directive in Ireland.

I graduated from the Galway Mayo Institute for Technology with an honours degree in Freshwater and Marine Biology in 2012 and qualified as a Marine mammmal (MMO) and Passive Acoustics Monitoring observer (PAM) and have BOSIET (Basic offshore safety induction & emergency training course), STWC 95 Regulation VI/1 and Code Table   A-VI/1-1 and PST certification for working offshore. I have a strong interest in underwater acoustics and marine mammals.

I have documented Ireland’s marine sector since 1986. My photojournalism aims to increase awareness of Ireland’s marine economy and environment. I have documented aquaculture, coastal zone management, marine ecotourism, offshore oil and gas exploration, oil pollution, air sea rescue, drift netting wild salmon, bluefin tuna, whales and dolphins and traditional sailing craft in photofeatures published in Irish and UK publications.

My first photojournalism report was published in Fish Farming International, based on his experience mussel farming in Clew Bay, Co. Mayo. My first travel photographs illustrate a book and a film on a circumnavigation of the Baltic Sea including visiting Russia which I shot called - ‘Sailing to Leningrad’, published by Collins/ Grafton, in 1987, and a Channel 4/Ulster television program - ‘40 Degrees West’- of a yacht (6 metres) voyage from Ireland to St. Petersburg and the Baltic States in Russia pre glasnost. In 1991 I photographed the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race in South America.

Since 2000 I have contributed to newspapers and magazines. Features are a speciality (see Publications) and my work has been published in the broadsheets - the Irish Times, Irish Independent magazine, Examiner, Financial Times, and the marine press - Inshore Ireland, the Irish Skipper, Marine Times, Fishing News (UK) and Fish Farming International (UK). In 2001 I was awarded a John Healy National Print Award for a feature article in the Irish Times on how the Shetland Islanders benefited from the development of Sullom Voe Oil Terminal and North Sea Oil.

Recent features include photojournalism reports on Seaweed harvesting, Noise pollution in the ocean, Environmental Impact Assessment and oil exploration in Ireland, Europe's new Marine Strategy Framework Directive legislation, Turbot farming , Galway Hookers, the Corrib gas project in Mayo, Ireland's coastal zone management policy, the Prestige oil spill disaster in Spain, satellite tagging Bluefin tuna off Donegal and photo features on the Mullet peninsula, Achill Yawls, and the Sceiligs in County Kerry
